Summer is the best time of year! From relaxing on the beach to hiking your favorite trails, it’s important you know how to prepare for the hot days ahead. For those of you looking to have a fun and safe summer, we’ve gathered a few quick tips to ensure that you enjoy your day in the sun.

1. Stay Hydrated

About 60% of our body is made up of water, and Healthline recommends that we drink around half a gallon of water each day to keep our bodies hydrated. Without the proper amount of water, you may become dehydrated, which can cause health problems and low energy levels.

Did you know 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated? Make sure you are drinking water consistently throughout the day and not just when you’re thirsty because (hint) that is actually a sign of dehydration. Some other signs to look out for include:

  • Dry mouth and tongue
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Fever and Chills

If you’re looking for a way to keep your energy levels up for a busy day and get the hydration you need, our SweetLeaf® Water Drops® will take your water to the next level. With six fruity flavors, you have plenty of options to stay hydrated throughout the day!

2. Wear SPF

SPF should be the last step in your morning skincare routine and is one of the most important. Wearing sunscreen plays a crucial role in protecting your skin from sunburn and reducing your risk of skin cancer, among many other things.

When enjoying a day outside, the breeze may feel cool, but UV rays can reach extreme levels. Your favorite sunscreen should be applied 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every two hours. The proper amount of sunscreen is 2 milligrams, which can be measured by adding lines on two fingers from the bottom to the top!

Make sure you check your location’s UV index frequently to know what other precautions you should take to practice sun safety.

3. Enjoy Outdoor Activities Outside of Peak Hours

Summer is a great time to enjoy activities such as swimming, biking and barbecuing, but it’s important to enjoy those activities outside of peak hours.

Doing activities during the hottest time of day can increase your chances of dehydration and even heatstroke. According to NBC News, it’s best to limit strenuous activities between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Make sure you stay vigilant, and be on the lookout for symptoms of heatstroke

  • High body temperature
  • Altered mental state
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Flushed skin
  • Rapid breathing
  • Racing heart rate
  • Headache

If you believe someone is experiencing these symptoms, call for medical help immediately and make sure you get them to a shaded area.

4. Eat Healthy

Food is where you get the energy you need to enjoy an active summer, so it is important to make sure that the food we are eating provides the proper nutrients to carry us through the day.

It is estimated that only 1 in 10 U.S. adults eat the recommended daily intake of 2-3 cups of fruits and veggies. A tasty and easy way to incorporate these important nutrients into your diet is through smoothies and salads or adding them into your cereal or favorite sauces.

Another important factor in a healthy diet is avoiding processed and added sugars. There are many amazing benefits of sugar-free eating, some of which include:

  • More energy
  • Lower risk of heart disease
  • Better nutrition

With a variety of stevia and monk fruit products, we make it easy to cut the sugar out of your diet. Check out some of our healthy SweetLeaf® recipes to fuel you all summer long!
