Healthy For Good program will raise awareness about added sugars

SweetLeaf®, an award-winning stevia sweetener from Wisdom Natural Brands® (WNB), is proud to announce it has pledged to be a national supporter of the American Heart Association’s Healthy For Good® movement, which inspires people everywhere to make lasting changes in their health and their lives, one small step at a time. In addition to the support, SweetLeaf® will work with the American Heart Association, the leading voluntary health organization devoted to a world of longer, healthier lives, to educate consumers about added sugars.

The American Heart Association recommends that adults limit the amount of added sugars to no more than half of the daily discretionary calories allowance. While this can vary by a person’s size and activity, for most American women, that’s no more than 100 calories per day, or about 6 teaspoons of sugar. For most men, it’s 150 calories per day, or about 9 teaspoons.

A long-established stevia brand, SweetLeaf® is a zero-calorie, no sugars stevia sweetener that may help adults when they begin to reduce added sugars to better align with the American Heart Association’s advice.

For the past 35 years, SweetLeaf® has made the world a sweeter place by offering people an alternative to sugars and artificial sweeteners. WNB works with industry groups, cardiologists, other physicians, noted national and international researchers and organizations like the American Heart Association, to reduce the excessive intake of added dietary sugars. Eating too much sugar is not only strongly associated with obesity and cardiovascular risk, it is also linked to high calorie, nutritionally inadequate diets, according to the scientific statement from the American Heart Association.

Carol May, CEO of Wisdom Natural Brands said, “We have a great deal of admiration and respect for the important work of the American Heart Association. Because we share the same goal—providing Americans with a healthier lifestyle through the reduction of added sugars—SweetLeaf® is very humbled to be accepted as a national supporter of the American Heart Association.”

“Reducing added sugars in foods and beverages reduces cardiovascular risk,” said Mariell Jessup, M.D., chief science and medical officer for the American Heart Association. “As people strive to cut down on added sugars to improve their health and lower their risk of obesity, overweight and type 2 diabetes, Healthy For Good will provide nutrition guidance and new recipes to help them achieve their goals. We are grateful for SweetLeaf®’s support, which helps us give more Americans the tools to eat smart and lead healthier lives.”

Part of SweetLeaf®’s collaboration with the American Heart Association will result in a new cookbooklet featuring low-sugar recipes. Informational and instructional materials will also be created for providers and their patients as well as consumers.

WNB continues to strive to help make positive changes in people’s lives one packet, drop, or sprinkle at a time.
